I am waiting for this lettuce to go to seed. Saving seeds from a single lettuce plant can give you hundreds (if not more) seeds for a small part of food sovereignty. Now more than ever we need to think about where our food is coming from, how it was grown and how to grow it ourselves.
New on the blog today: My Must Grow Plants: Culinary Herbs.
May you have a blessed summer solstice!
I still have some bok choy in my garden, I have been succession sowing and growing it under 50% shade cloth and only today has it started to bolt. This pic is from a week or so ago.
A quick snack from the garden.
Did you know that chard is a biennial? This is one of my plants that I wanted to save seeds from. I overwintered it so it can complete its lifecycle this season. The flowers are so very tiny, they actually make tiny berries and have multiple seeds. These ones are getting closer to being ready. You’ll want to wait the full two years, then wait until the little berries have dried up on the stalks to harvest the seeds.
Spent some time in the garden yesterday with my big camera. Take pictures of your garden, I never used to and wish I had pictures of the evolution of my gardens over the years. Now I make it a point to go out and take pictures at least every few weeks. You can look back and see just how much both you and your garden have grown. Some say to take a picture every day, I say whatever works for you. You’ll be happy you did. I take close up shots as well as pulled back shots, but the close ups are probably my favorite.
A small glimpse of one of the front yard garden areas. These snap dragons are 5th generation seeds from my sons elementary school. (When my youngest was moving on to middle school they gifted me a basket of flowers. I have been growing snap dragons and collecting their seeds every year since.) Every time I look at them I remember my time volunteering at the school. 🦁
